Ahnapee & Western Railway – Andy Laurent will tell the story of Door County’s only railroad through pictures, stories, and information gathered during fifteen years of in-depth research on the company, its employees, and its customers. Historical documents and items from Mr. Laurent’s collection will also be on display, including the company’s original Articles of Incorporation. Mr. Laurent is a railroad official with a short line railroad near Chicago, and a practiced public speaker. He lives in Indiana, but his parents came from Rosiere and Casco.
The A&W traveled through the Door County towns of Sturgeon Bay, Maplewood, and Forestville…and continued on through Algoma, Rio Creek, and Casco to a connection with its bigger brother, the Kewaunee Green Bay & Western Railroad. The line operated from 1892 until 1984, but was active in Door County from 1894 until 1968.
