Dear Friends,

As this year begins your Board and our volunteer teams have been busy preparing for this new season at our Village. New brochures and signs and upgrading our websites and rack cards have kept our team busy. The day will come when this work can be done by a paid employee; until that day comes, it’s done by our Board members willing to share their most valuable possession, their time. When you meet any of our team, take a moment to personally thank them.
Take time this summer and visit our Heritage Village and Eagle Bluff Lighthouse. Discover the history of the Village; buildings were selected because each one represents something that has important historical significance in developing our nation and our own community. There is something to learn, and we will provide information and at certain times guided tours. Check program schedules on-line or at the new kiosk. To find us, follow the signs. We are carefully hidden, in plain sight behind the trees at the corner of Michigan and STH 42-57. See the lovely gardens and take the Heritage trail to the Hanson farm grounds, open this year for the first time.
So plan an outing to the Heritage Village. Remember these facilities belong to you, our members. We, the Board of Directors, are elected by you to guide your organization. If you like what we are doing, tell us and your friends and encourage them to join the Historical Society.

Heritage Village News:
Greetings to you all from the Heritage Village at Big Creek. It seems only a short time ago since we turned the key in the lock to close our 2012 Village season. It had been a very fine summer, indeed. So now it was time to take a breath of fresh air and relax for a bit. But I should emphasize “just a bit!” It is now only about 6 weeks before we open for yet another year. The programs are set to go, work is progressing. But there is so very much work to do behind the scenes to be ready. Building and artifacts are cleaned. Supplies are purchased. Volunteers are recruited. And the list goes on. This spring we are in the process of installing an office in the Greene Store that will seem, for all intents and purposes, as if it had always been there. Thanks to Ronn and Mary Gilbert we will have a roll top desk, fitting to our era, sitting in one of the front windows, with an antique office chair to match. Thanks to the wonders of technology, it will be equipped with a computer and wirelessly connected to a printer in the back room. We will have far more flexibility for copying and printing than we have had, along with making posters as needed. The Schopf House is so very close to being open for the season. The Hanson House will be dedicated this summer and, as progress allows, people will have the ability to at least visit the site. When you see one of our dedicated volunteers, give them a big ‘thank you’. Also, consider getting involved as a volunteer yourself. It is so very rewarding and fun! It is my goal that this season will be the best yet. Last year’s attendance was the highest on record. Can we outdo ourselves? Let’s hope. Thank you for all your support and help. I look forward to seeing you often at our Sunday programs! And invite your neighbors!

Cordially,

Dan G Olson, Curator/Manager
Heritage Village at Big Creek

 50 years later…

Looking back in history is always eye-opening…how much we forget and how little we remember. A junior in high school in 1963, I was more interested in current events than many of my classmates. Even then history was “my thing” and I enjoyed scanning the newspapers and tuning into Walter Cronkite’s evening news broadcast. But my recall of the events that captured our attention 50 years ago is sketchy at best. So I turned on my computer and finger walked down memory lane. Hope you enjoy the stroll…

Top 12 events of 1963, one for each month:
January 14 – George Wallace was elected governor of Alabama for his first term.
February 25 – Betty Friedan published “The Feminine Mystique.”
March 5 – Country singer Patsy Cline died in a plane crash.
April 22 – Dr. Michael De Bakey implanted an artificial heart in a patient for the first time.
May1 – The diet drink Tab debuts.
June 12 – Civil rights leader Medgar Evers is murdered in Mississippi.
July 1 – The U.S. Postal Service introduced the zip code system.
August 28 – Martin Luther King gave his “I have a dream” speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC.
September 1 – ?????
October 13 – The term “Beatlemania” is coined after the Beatles perform at the Paladium.
November 22 – President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.
December 8 – Crooner Frank Sinatra’s son was kidnapped.

So, did you recall some of these footnotes in history? More importantly, did you recall the major event that fills in the September 1 blank? Unfortunately, the answer doesn’t appear in a Google search. Well, let me help you out…Eagle Bluff Lighthouse Museum opened to the public for the first time. If you got the answer correct, congrats! You are the star of DCHS!! Now, let’s see you all at the lighthouse this season. It is going to be a huge anniversary celebration. Bring your membership card for a complimentary tour.

Oh, by the way, in 1963 the average house cost $12,650.00, the average yearly income was $5,807.00, the average cost of a new car was $3,233.00, the gas to fill up the car was 29 cents a gallon, and a loaf of bread was 22 cents. Be still my heart…

FROM YOUR PRESIDENT, George Evenson
Friends and Members of the Historical Society
I want to apologize for this report coming out later than usual. We are making some changes, trying new things, and hopefully you will find this format with more information.
First, I want to thank all our volunteers. Without their unselfish sharing of their time, nothing would happen; not to forget you, our members, who support us with your interest and donations.
Since 1926, our Society has served our community, preserving local history and presenting programs to tell the wonderful stories of our communities and our people. Keeping our pledge embodies our mission and vision.
One very noticeable change the Board made recently was changing the name of our Village to HERITAGE VILLAGE AT BIG CREEK. In the process of developing a new business plan for the Village, we recognized there needed to be changes. Along with improving the educational opportunities available to our visitors, we are:
	installing a sign along Highway 42-57 between Utah & Michigan Street
	installing an information kiosk at the entrance to the Village
	Updating the website
	Creating a Facebook page for Heritage Village at Big Creek
	Setting up a small office in the Greene Store
In addition, we are working on:
	installing more information outside of each building for when guides are not present to tell a small part of the history of the building and the people who used it.
	creating a self-guided tour book. Print a booklet, which will be sold for a small fee, outlining the history of the buildings at the Heritage Village and documenting the story of the families who have lived there.

As usual, we will have volunteer docents providing tours. This should give our guests a variety of opportunities to learn the story of what rural life was like around 1900. If interested in becoming a docent, please contact Dan Olson at 421-2332.
With the other information included in this letter you will see we did have a good year 2012.
Remember, you as our members also have opportunities to be a part of this exciting new program. Bring your family and friends to the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse Museum, Heritage Village, our dinner meetings and the programs at the Village.
Wonderful things that happened at the Village in 2012 …
Schopf House – The dedication of Schopf house was an exciting event with a large turnout at the Village on August 27, 2012. This event couldn’t have happened without the generosity of the many donors and volunteers – a huge thank you to all of them – especially the Village Committee and Coggin Heeringa! We still have a little work to do upstairs but the house will be open to the public this summer.
The DCHS is fortunate to have the support of so many donors and their members. We also received grants from numerous organizations.
Blacksmiths – The blacksmiths were there every Thursday afternoon, & most Sundays, working in the oppressive heat we encountered last summer. If you didn’t get a chance to see them in action, please make sure to stop by as it is quite impressive.
Hanson House – The work has slowed considerably due to lack of funding but progress has been made. A group of Hans Hanson’s descendants hope to have a family reunion on the site so we are hoping to find donations and grants to keep the project moving along.

Heritage Village – SAVE THE DATES!
Heritage Village will be opening on June 16th with the Community Band.
We plan on having the Village open every day from 1:30-3:30 along with special programs two mornings a week.
June 23rd will be a presentation on Antique Coins and Currency by James Downey along with a blacksmith demonstration.
Dan Olson has already booked Mark Moran for June 30th to do another Antique Appraisal event so dig through your attics and garages for those items you want him to look at. We’re looking for volunteers to assist with this event and other programs so contact Dan Olson at 421-2332 if you can help.
July 7th will be a Lumberjack Demonstration by Mike and Pat Madden.
Watch your newsletter or check the website calendar for more information.

Heritage Village Maintenance Goals for 2013
As any homeowner would know, we are faced with ongoing maintenance (x9 buildings). We encountered some problems with the Chapel building this year, one of them being an elusive leak which is being carefully watched.
During the summer of 2013 we need to tackle the following:
	Vignes School – exterior painting
	Greene Store – exterior painting and, hopefully, interior, if money is available.
	Paint the bench on the Warren House porch
	Stain or seal the benches around the property
	Touch up painting on all of the buildings where needed
We have obtained estimates for the exterior work and will rely on volunteers to assist in the small projects. Contact Dan Olson if you would like to volunteer!

Future maintenance needs for 2014 are:
	Re-shingle the roof of the Vignes School
	Repaint the interior of Vignes School.
	Repaint the Peterson Feed & Seed/Blacksmith shop building.
Did you know??? . . . The Chapel, Vignes School or other buildings are available for weddings or group meetings. Some uses would require a small fee. Contact Dan Olson if you’re interested in reserving a building. The Chapel can accommodate about 35 people.
New ideas we’re working on for 2013 for the entire Historical Society
	Collect email addresses of members to see if there is a desire to receive notices and newsletters via email.
	Increase advertising to make Village and dinner programs more accessible for non-members
	Possibility of collecting dinner reservations, payments, and donations through PayPal

50 years! Notes from Eagle Bluff Lighthouse Curator/Manager . . .
In 1960, the Door County Historical Society began the arduous task of rescuing Eagle Bluff Lighthouse from rot and ruin. Volunteers donated hundreds of hours to the project . . . cleaning, removing paint, and refinishing woodwork. Three years later, gleaming and glowing, the little lighthouse on the bluff officially opened to the public for the first time on September 1, 1963.
Although initially open for limited touring hours, visitors began arriving from around the world. Walking through the door of the lighthouse, the young and not so young delighted in the stories of the keepers and their families. And in the ensuing years, the lighthouse continued to welcome visitors. Last year, 15,536 visitors participated in docent-led tours, including 73 bus groups and 102 Door County Trolleys.
But the lighthouse story was only beginning; history is fluid, and our knowledge of the past is constantly enlightened and broadened. And that holds true for Eagle Bluff Lighthouse. In the past 50 years restoration of the lighthouse has continued; the history of the keepers has been expanded based on research. Each season the DCHS staff of docents arrives ready to share new information, and enliven their tours with new details of life in the lighthouse.
This year will be especially exciting as we celebrate this very special anniversary. Theme tours and special events will honor the memory of the keepers: Henry Stanley, William Duclon, and Peter Coughlin, as well as the families who supported them. Concluding the restoration projects begun last year, a new wooden railing will be installed on the second floor. It is hoped funding will be provided by the State of Wisconsin for new roofs on all of the lighthouse property’s buildings and repairs to the white-washed brick exterior wall.
In preparation of the upcoming celebratory season, the DCHS lighthouse staff met for an in-service session in mid-February. All of our 2012 staff returned for another season and we welcomed a new addition to our family, Carol Schuster. Our enthusiasm is unbridled…and so we look forward to opening the lighthouse door once again.
It is in memory of the DCHS members who saved the lighthouse from certain decay and destruction that we dedicate this special 50th anniversary year. It is the dedication of the men and women who toiled to preserve the heritage and history of our maritime that preserved Eagle Bluff Lighthouse for generations to come. Opening day is Friday, May 17, and we hope to see you then . . .
Patti Podgers, Curator/Manager

Dear Friends,

Our business season ended mid-October and we are now looking forward to 2013. We wish to thank all the wonderful folks who served as volunteers at the Village, workers at the Village, and our Board members. Thank you for sharing your time. I hope you feel satisfied that your time was well spent. I do, as do our visitors and members. Next year think about becoming a volunteer. I think you will enjoy the experience.

Last month the Board created a Committee to study our Village operations. How can we more fully utilize our resources to increase the number of visitors and make the Village more educational and memorable? Next year we hope to implement some changes. I’m asking you, our members, for your comments and suggestions. Call me, Jeff Weir, Gene Remy, Bill Chaudoir, Dan Olson or Jim Maki. We want to hear from you.

This will be our last newsletter for this year. Keep warm and enjoy the holidays. We’ll see you in April.

NEWS FROM THE VILLAGE
Greetings to all. We have now ended the 2012 season at the Village. I love to trumpet the news that we had 1480 Sunday Visitors at the Village, up 270 from the year before. I was most pleased with those who were program leaders. They were, without exception, excellent!

This is a very good way to say a hearty “Thank You” to all the Volunteers who gave so freely of their time all summer long to make the season a success. It could not have occurred without them all! More information will be forthcoming, but we plan to have an appreciation “coffee” at the Village on December 1st at the Greene Store.

Now, we have a long list of things needing to be done before a new season. There has been a “Village Planning Committee” established to study all aspects of the Village, and, in time, you will see significant, if subtle changes made with maybe great strides, or with baby steps. It’s time for us to examine who we are, where we are going as a Village. Wonderful times are ahead.

For now, I ask that you keep us in mind as we prepare for the best season yet! We can always hope, you know!

Thanks Everyone!

Village Manager

Notes from Eagle Bluff Lighthouse…
The lamp at Eagle Bluff Lighthouse has been extinguished for another season…
The shutters are closed, the doors secured; the lighthouse on the bluff is quiet and dark. But just days ago the yard was filled with visitors–adults, children, dogs, bikes in the rack. It was a good year, a busy year, and most certainly my staff and I are looking forward to a rest. What I personally miss most is the camaraderie that Mark, Ed, Jennifer, Ann, Myrv, Edward, Marilyn, Chris and I share. The joy we take in each other is most certainly reflected in our interaction with our visitors.
So what were the highlights of 2012, you might ask. Well, let me see…I think top of my list is the weather, warm and balmy and very summery. (No storms!!) Although I loved the heat, poor Ed Felhofer was miserable. Good thing he was traveling through Alaska for the worst of it.
Our visitors were delightful, much happier than last year; very few complaints and tons of compliments. Statistically, our visitors are adults. We do cater to the youngsters during our tours, but they are definitely the minority. Sadly, we do have children who walk through the door and beg to go on a tour only to be met with “we don’t have time” or “you wouldn’t enjoy it.”
We accomplished so much…I completed a new history of the lighthouse, with “graphic” assistance from Pete Schuster. It is truly gorgeous! Available for purchase for $2.00. The house was completely re-plastered and re-painted. A new second-floor railing will be completed in the spring and the old screen door repaired and painted at the same time. We continue to struggle with the removal of the paint on the Milwaukee Cream City brick. It did not come off as hoped. Considering plan B. To be continued…
Now let’s talk numbers. The following are the final attendance figures for 2012: 7,986 adults, 665 students, 1,378 youth, and 755 children visited this season. Group tours accounted for 2,730 guests arriving on 73 buses. The Door County Trolley brings groups to the lighthouse each weekday morning; this season 2,016 visitors arrived on 102 trolleys. (Thank you, AJ Frank, for your support of our little lighthouse.) The final head-count? A delightful 15,497!!!! That beats 2010, which was a busier year than last, and storm-free. 
There are many thanks to be handed out…to my staff, first and foremost, goes a huge hug. Without their support and dedication, I could not do my job. Special gratitude to George Evenson and the DCHS Board of Directors for doing a great job at managing our organization. Kudos for a job well-done. Kelli Bruns and her awesome staff, what can I say? Without their help, we would not have found the dollars to continue and complete our restoration projects. And to the many visitors who walked through the lighthouse door, thank you. Without your admissions the lighthouse door would be shut tight.
So, Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, enjoy the quiet of winter. May the keepers’ spirits rest easy and sleep well.
Respectfully Submitted.
Society Members:

Only two months left of our dinner meeting year. Throughout the year we have had good attendance. We understand the cost of meals is going up. Even with that people still enjoy coming to hear a good program and meet with their fellow members. Our Program Chair, Linda Sealey, is hard at work preparing for next year.
Our weekend programs are drawing more visitors as word spreads — “it’s a great way to spend an afternoon.“ Have you attended any programs this summer? Have you visited the Lighthouse or our Village? How about a little time at our newest attraction – the Hanson House? Only by visiting, will you get the idea it’s a great Historical Society we have “bringing History to life.” This can only happen with volunteers and your moral support and gifts. You will soon receive a letter from the Society asking for your financial support. Please help us continue the work.
Last Sunday the local Sons of Norway had their day at the Crossroads, including a visit to our Hanson House. About 50 visitors did stop by. All were impressed and enjoyed the lovely day. There is still a lot of work to be done, but please stop in and walk the grounds. Only a visit will reveal what a historical treasure this is. Mary Ann Bennett is our groundskeeper along with Jim Maki. Not a blade of grass is out of place. This winter we expect to finish the inside and next year it should be open for regular visits.
Thank you for your continuing support. Without you we could not exist.

News from The Historical Village at the Crossroads
If we could experience a “time warp” and find ourselves living in 2112, how would we look back upon the quaint times of life a hundred years ago? Would we wonder however in the world people living in 1980 to 2010 could live under such primitive conditions? Would our progeny do justice or regard us as old fashioned? It’s a question worth pondering. The Historical Village at the Crossroad’s primary goal is to educate young and old about the marvelous legacies left by family and friends. Life certainly wasn’t easy in those days. Nevertheless, our ancestors were learned people who were educated in the school of hard work and life experiences. We find it our welcome task to be appreciative of our ancestors and to accurately define their lives and the treasures they have left us. We can certainly hope those living a century from now will appreciate what we have left to them.

The 2012 season at The Village is fast approaching its end. It has been a remarkable season with well-received and well-presented programs. We’ve had loyal volunteers give much time being the engine that drives all we do. It’s been a good season, too, because of our attendance. As of September 30th, the YTD Sunday attendance stood at 1444, 343 ahead of 2011 at the same point in time. The word is out! We can confidently say The Village has become a deliberate destination of more and more guests.

Sincerely,

Dan G Olson
Village Manager

Notes from Eagle Bluff Lighthouse…
As the winds blow cold and the leaves fall like rain, the staff at the lighthouse prepares for a long winter’s sleep. On October 21 we will cover the furniture and store the china. (The mice enjoy running on the plate rail during the winter, knocking everything to the floor!) Once we have tucked away the odds and ends, the doors will be locked and the closed sign hung on its hook.
There certainly is a sadness to closing the lighthouse for the season, but all good things must come to an end, even if only temporarily. And we all need a rest. As of October 3, 13,601 visitors have taken one of our tours. Some of those visitors arrived on a tour bus (58 to date); others arrived via a Door County Trolley (89 to date).
But the success the lighthouse has enjoyed this season is owned by many. Our staff is absolutely amazing and I want to salute each and every one of them…
Mark Emmerling, Ed Felhofer, Jennifer Moeller, Ann Sheridan, Myrv Somerhalder, Edward and Marilyn Stone, and Chris Weidenbacher…and it is my great hope that they will all return next year. Late arriving tours, cyclists riding through the lighthouse yard, miserable weather…nothing dampened their spirits or stole their smiles.
And a huge “thank you” goes out to the staff at Peninsula State Park. Our superintendent Kelli Bruns is a great friend of the lighthouse, and Arnie Lindauer—formerly state park district superintendent—is working closely with us to secure the completion of all remaining restoration projects. If you did not hear our good news, this summer we completed all interior restoration. We are hoping to re-roof next summer, based on state funding.
Oh, I did forget to mention our wonderful U.S. Coast Guard. Such handsome men! I reported to them earlier in the summer, with a follow-up call in August, that the trees are hiding our solar lamp. After consulting with Kelli, the Coasties have confirmed that the trees need to be trimmed out. The project is scheduled for sooner than later.
My personal goal was completing a historical history of Eagle Bluff Lighthouse. As of today, October 4, the booklet is completed and available for purchase in our museum shop. Mission accomplished!
Hope you all have a wonderful holiday season, and a warm, cozy winter. Hope to see you all in the spring. Opening day to be announced!!

Dear Members,

It’s hard to realize that it’s already September. This year your Board begins brain storming. Subject: what will our Society need to do in order to sustain interest in our organization and the services we provide our membership and visitors. Our docents at the Lighthouse at Eagle Bluff with our partners at the DNR are working together to give our visitors a memorable experience. While the Village is doing better each year, more needs to be done to attract more visitors. Starting this fall and through opening in the spring of 2013, we need to look at our operation. One accomplishment will be the installation of a sign along Highway 42/57.

We have a splendid selection of period buildings – each one has a story to tell. Very few societies have these kinds of assets, besides being along the most traveled stretch of road in all of Door County. We realize that we need income to maintain buildings, as well as payment for a small staff. If you have ideas, let us know. Call a Board member or write a letter. We are willing to listen. Yes, we might be 85 years old but next spring there will be some surprising new ideas at the Village. Maybe it will become a real Folk Architecture Park, the only one in Wisconsin. What do you think of that?

Be sure to visit our attractions. Not much good weather left in 2012.

News from the Historical Village

We have had a remarkable season at the Village. As of September 2 our 2012 total Sunday attendance (YTD) finally pulled ahead of last year. I suspect this would have happened sooner if we had not been scorched with unbearable heat early in our season. From my own observations and comments from others, the programs have been well presented and well received. It seems hard to fathom that our season is drawing to a close so quickly. Our first ever “Home-made Craft and Produce Day” on September 16th will include about 15 vendors with all manner of items. This is a good start to something I hope we could make into an annual event. We have extended the Village Hours on the 16th from 1:00-5:00 pm to give adequate time for the vendors to make their presence worth their time. Stop on by! I am most proud of the volunteers who give so willingly of their time in a “labor of love” to make the Village experience happen and come alive to our visitors. I would dare say that all our visitors go away impressed with all the astounding work that makes the Village “the place to visit” in Door County!

Cordially,
Village Manager

Notes from the Curator

In 1960, the Door County Historical Society began the tedious and tiresome job of restoring Eagle Bluff Lighthouse. Working under a license to operate, the DCHS invested thousands of donated dollars and volunteers labored thousands of intensive hours to restore, renovate, and refurbish the abandoned 1868 lighthouse.
Well, maybe abandoned is a rather strong word…how about deserted? No, well, in any case, the lighthouse was in shambles. Unloved since the lamp was automated in 1926 and the third and final keeper, Peter Coughlin retired, the lighthouse on the bluff rapidly deteriorated. During its 34 years of abandonment, yes, I prefer that word, the lovely little Cream City brick building suffered from the wear and tear, as well as abuse, of occasional renters and squatters.
For the record, the lighthouse was built by the Federal government. Suffering from neglect following Keeper Coughlin’s departure, the lighthouse had become an eyesore. In consideration of its value, the Federal Government deeded the building to the State of Wisconsin. In the early 1930s the Wisconsin State Conservation Commission was granted a quit claim deed for 10.98 acres of the original 12 acres and the acreage became part of Peninsula State Park.
The Lighthouse Bureau, not yet the USCG, then leased the remaining 1.02 acres including all buildings excluding the lantern and light tower, to the State of Wisconsin. The transfers were complete on May 9, 1936. Snugly located in Peninsula State Park, the lighthouse was occasionally occupied by park employees, although the building was most often vacant.
Following a re-organization and revitalization of the Door County Historical Society, the membership sought a worthy restoration project. A variety of sites was suggested, but in the end the lighthouse at Eagle Bluff was selected. And so the paperwork was signed, sealed, and delivered granting the DCHS permission to restore the building and open its doors to visitors. On September 1, 1963, the public was invited to tour Eagle Bluff Lighthouse for the very first time.
Unfortunately, years of cold winters and hot summers have taken their toll. In 2010 two rooms remained wallpapered. The paper was falling from the walls, plaster was peeling, and the painted walls reflected dirty hand prints and chips. And without a named park superintendent, I could not move forward to complete repairs and restoration of the lovely building. But coming to my rescue was the new super Kelli Bruns. Like a princess on a white charger, Kelli came to our rescue. I wrote up detailed descriptions of the repair projects, and Kelli submitted them to the State of Wisconsin. She followed the progress of the submissions and kept me in the loop.
And then one beautiful day late last month, the good news arrived…the money was coming and with a big smile, Kelli told me to call Bob Ryan and Travis Price, and tell them to “come on back.” Sweetest news I could have received! Yes, we are dusty and messy and disheveled. But soon we will be looking mighty pretty, all white and sparkly. Come by for a visit…the door is always open!!

Dear Friends,
Your Society is undergoing changes. During the past several months we have reviewed and put into effect a new business plan. Glenn Timmerman has agreed to become our new Director of Operations. Because of growth and the complexities of managing a growing organization, this move became necessary. We have already implemented a new accounting system and the benefits are already apparent. With this new organization we will be better able to fulfill our Vision and Mission. As we look to the future, we need to coordinate our member services and our community outreach.
You will be fully informed of all our activities. By the September meeting we should be able to give you a full update. Of course, you will need to approve all our actions, because our By-laws will need to be updated at our annual meeting.
Be sure to stop by the Lighthouse and Village and get to know what‘s going on. You will be both informed and enlightened. They are free to members.
Stop by the Hanson House. Our groundskeeper, Mary Ann Bennett, has done a great job. While the house is not finished, walk around and get a feel for the place. And see our new sign. Have a great summer.

Notes from the Curator…

The history of lighthouses is fascinating, and for many of our visitors, enchanting and romantic. But as I have delved more deeply into the stories of the lighthouses and their keepers, I am drawn into the personal histories of the men and women who worked and lived their jobs, literally.
Although lighthouse history is male-dominated, most recently I have become fascinated by the story of the women who lived and worked at the lighthouse. What about these remarkable mothers, wives, and sisters who stood tall, working side-by-side the men in their lives. Well, let me tell you…the story of the women in the American lighthouses is stunning. So let me share with you a bit of history.
Serving alongside their husbands, brothers, and fathers, women performed in a multitude of ways without benefit of financial compensation. Julia Duclon, the wife of the second Eagle Bluff lighthouse keeper, was a perfect example of the supportive wife.
Julia raised seven sons, kept a spotless home, sewed quilts, baked an average of 14 loaves of bread a day, and was well-known for her hospitality and kindness. The daughter of a lighthouse keeper, Ambrose Davenport of Mackinaw Island, we can assume “she knew what she was getting into” when her husband William became a keeper shortly after their marriage. (Her father may have suggested “have I got a job for you!”)
Had her William been disabled, suffer an illness, or pass on while employed as a keeper, it can be assumed Julia would have been named his replacement. And from my research, it appears women were paid the same amount as their male counterparts. Julia, however, was never called upon to assume her husband’s position, and she never received the title “assistant keeper” or the paycheck that accompanied the title.
The identities of the countless unnamed women who silently served have been lost to history, but in honor of all of them, let us remember and honor…Kate Walker of the isolated donut-shaped lighthouse a mile from Staten Island. And Mary Terry, the keeper at Sand Point Light Station at Escanaba, Michigan, who died at 69 years of age when the lighthouse caught fire. Or Abbie Burgess at Matinicus Rock Light Station, whose heroism saved the light when as a child she kept the lamp lit for ships passing below the lighthouse during a life-stealing storm. Valiant women all, who served because it was not only their duty, but because it was the right thing to do.

REPORT FROM THE HISTORICAL VILLAGE

I am happy to report that the past two Sundays have had very good attendance which will help us catch up and ultimately exceed last year’s attendance. We’re lagging a bit behind last year largely because we endured some exceedingly hot Sundays which surely did not help. There are, however, some programs coming soon which will surely help us catch up. Most notably, “The History of the Washington Island Ferry”, The Cherryland ‘A’s Model A day, and the “Craft and Produce day.” Those will be likely good draws. The other programs are very worthy as well. For all intents and purposes all is going well with the Village but my one frustration is getting Volunteers to commit to respond positively. It is very disconcerting when some don’t bother to respond to my emails or phone messages I leave. This isn’t true of all volunteers, for sure. But it is for some and it perplexes me. This is surely not new to me! After 40 years in my professional life as a clergyman, I know what it’s like getting people to say “yes”! I’m glad I’m not calling for them to give money!!!! All of that notwithstanding, I plan to make this the best season on record. I do not give up easily! I appreciate your support!

August 27th
Picnic at the Village

Though the reconstruction will not be completed, the Village Committee invites the members of the Door County History Society to a the dedication of the Schopf House at the August picnic meeting at Historical Village at the Crossroads at Big Creek.

We believe the house was built around 1900, a time when most Door County residents were farmers, predominantly from Europe. Door County was completely forested before European settlement, but by the end of the 19th century, most of the good logs were cut and gone.

Gus and Caroline Lautenbach, who built the home, came from southwest Germany in hopes of building a better life for themselves and their ten children.

Mr. Lautenbach was a harness maker – a significant job in a world run by horse power. He also was a farmer, working 14 hours a day to grow food for his family and maybe sell a little surplus. But money was always scarce, and life was hard. Disease was common and one of Gus and Caroline’s kids died. The Lautenbachs were charter members of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church.

After a few years, this home was sold. From 1918-2005 it belonged to the Harry and Christian Ostrand family who were Norwegians. Their son, Henry Ostrand, bought the home and his family lived in it until 2005. Next Bob Costa owned it, and he donated it to the Door County Historical Society.

The house is named for Orville Schopf, former Door County Historian and former president of the Door County Historical Society. He was instrumental in finding this home and getting it moved to this site in 2006.

Bonnie Balch is the Chair of the Schopf House Team and she and her group are frantically working on the first floor interior in order to be ready for the event.

Hope you can join us for the dedication!

Your August newsletter will contain the reservation form so be sure to watch for it.

PROGRAM: HORSESHOE BAY FARMS: THE LAND, THE PLAYERS, THEIR PLACE IN HISTORY
Presented by Glenn Timmerman

If you live in Door County or have visited Door County, chances are you have driven past the historic Horseshoe Bay Farms barns and homes on Bay Shore Drive. This property is now in the hands of Glenn and Barb Timmerman and has recently been placed on the National and State Register of Historic Communities.

The farm was at one time a world class Holstein breeding farm and at other times the largest fruit producer and seasonal employer in Door County. The evolution of the Farm under the ownership of the Murphy and Cowles families is a tale of entrepreneurial spirit, a deep love of the property, and a cast of characters and accompanying stories that ‘makes history’.

Glenn Timmerman will share his learning’s from the National Historic Register application process, including the evolution of the families and the farm over almost 130 years, including rare film footage and pictures.
This is the first known comprehensive telling of the Horseshoe Bay Farms story.
