Words From the President

As your new President, I, and your Board of Directors, hope to move this organization forward a bit by taking some steps to make your Historical Society a growing organization. Step 1 is the hiring of an Executive Director to help in this endeavor. BUT we need YOUR help in doing so. Several months ago you were all given a pledge form to help raise enough money to pay for an Executive Director. Our Society has grown over the past number of years and we are now at a point where we absolutely NEED someone to help us run the organization, Heritage Village at Big Creek and Eagle Bluff Lighthouse. This is more than our volunteers can take on as most of us have full time jobs and families to also attend to. PLEASE help YOUR wonderful Historical Society in moving forward and making it the BEST Historical Society in the area by making a pledge or donation for our new Executive Director!!!!
The next step will be to enter the 21st century and send our Newsletters via email. This will save our organization hundreds of dollars in paper, postage and time. For those of you who do NOT have an email address, we ask that you find an email “buddy” – someone in your family or circle of friends that does have a computer that you can access the email. If you do not have such a person available we will continue to mail the Newsletter.
Another step is also going to be an invoice system for membership fees (included with this Newsletter). The Board has voted to eliminate “life” memberships. Don’t worry, those that already have life memberships will continue to have life memberships. We have also raised the membership fees (very little), to help defray higher costs.
One last significant change will be the change in time of our dinner meetings. We are going to begin at 6:00 p.m. instead of 6:30 p.m. We hope this change allows more people to attend our dinner meetings and presentations.
The Board of Directors hope these changes will begin to increase our revenues and move our organization forward to a more exciting Historical Society for each and every one of you.
Spring Cleaning and Rummage Sale at Heritage Village at Big Creek
Your volunteer help is needed for spring cleaning at Heritage Village from 9-4 each day: May 11, May 12 and June 4. If you are able to spare a half of day labor, please call Mary Williams at (920) 818-0290.
While you are spring cleaning at home, please save gently used items for the Village Rummage Sale (No clothing or shoes). Items may be dropped off at the Village on the spring cleaning dates of May 11, May 12 and June 4, from 9-4:00 daily. If you have larger items that require a pickup, please call the Village number (920) 421-2332.
INTRODUCTION OF NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR – Trudy Herbst
The Door County Historical Society is pleased to announce the hiring of Trudy Herbst as our new Executive Director. The Board of Directors believes that NOW is the time to hire an executive director so that the organization may continue to flourish and successfully address its mission to preserve and celebrate Door County’s rich history.
Trudy comes with a wealth of experience in nonprofit management at Door County organizations. Herbst was recently employed for over 12 years as the Development Director at the Door County Maritime Museum and was actively involved in all aspects of development: the elimination of capital debt, restoration of the tug “John Purves” and Cana Island Light Station, programming and fundraising events.

Our Blacksmiths Need Your Help
Are you willing to help the Blacksmiths? Due to their popularity, they plan on working on Tuesdays during the season also. Because they are adding a day, they will be short on supplies and need just a little financial help.
A donation of $23.00 will buy a bag of Coal – they will be short by about 5 bags by adding Tuesdays to the schedule. $115.00 would cover the season.
They make rings out of horseshoe nails to give to kids that are watching them – a box costs $13.00
They also need:
• Iron in various sizes and shapes (check your basements and barns)
• Railroad spikes
• Horse shoes
A donation of $25.00 can get them the extra set of miscellaneous tools they need like: Chalk, Paint, Metal Sealer, Carbon writing pencils, Borax and Muriatic acid.
